Global economic development Essay Example for Free

Global economic development Essay If Gwlad want to achieve any economic growth and attain a strong economy as its neighbors in Western Europe it must carry out detailed SWOT analysis. Such an analysis involves determining the country’s strength, weakness, opportunities and threat. One of the major strength that Gwlad enjoys as a country is it strategic location. Being close to the most developed nation in the world then it will be easier to access and export goods abroad to a market which is willing and able to buy. The second strength is the relative peace that the country enjoys and that of the surrounding nation which means that foreign investors will be willing to set up businesses (Anderson, 2007). One of the main weaknesses in this country is low level of industrialization which will translate to low out put and therefore less export compared to other country in the surrounding. Also with a population of just 3 million people it means that the aggregate demand is very low and for multinational who want to venture into such country and market their produce, the low demand expected for their products may discourage them. Furthermore this country seems to be expecting poor infrastructure and this raises the cost of doing business which discourage foreign direct investment (root 2006). The low level of services may be another hindrance to foreign direct investment. Foreign investors Global economic development 2 values a strong financial system that is able to allocate capital efficiently, mobilizing saving, monitor firms, share and diversity risk with the low level of GDP the consumers’ purchasing power is weak and therefore this further reduces the aggregate demand and output levels in the country. Also the country relies on few sectors to support the economy and there is a need to expand on such areas (Carroll, 2006). One of the major threat that the country faces is competition form rivals who are well established and their industries have become stable such that they are able to supply goods in the global market at low cost. Secondly since the country is not a member of European Union then members may impose both tariff and non tariff barriers to trade from goods exported from Gwlad which will increase the prices of good exported on members country. High prices will discourage consumers’ consumption of such goods which will ultimately reduce export and affect the country’s balance of payment. The country should take steps to proceed with privatization of most public corporations since such move encourage foreign direct investment and also improves on transparency and good governance of such companies (ridout, 2005). Since the financial system play a pivotal role on the growth of an economy the government should implement policies designed to streamline the sector. To encourage investment in the country then it is also vital to revise its taxation policies and develop a scheme geared towards benefiting foreign business. Entry of multinationals in the domestic market have some adverse effects in that some of the domestics firm are not strong enough to compete favorably with foreign firms such that they require protection from the government. Therefore the government Global economic development 3 should develop policy geared towards protecting domestic firms and also protecting capital flight which mostly affect the balance of payment of the country if not taken into consideration. To ensure that employment level in the country rises and that multinational does not take advantage of lack of employment policies to bring in expatriate even in areas where local can work then labor policies should be drawn which includes issues of minimal wages to be paid. Regional trading blocks such as the EU and others aid international trade by reducing or eliminating both tariff and not tariff barriers to trade therefore incase Gwlad want to participate more in the global market then it should realign its foreign policies which will enable it to be accommodated in such trading blocks. Active signing of both bilateral and multilateral agreement is necessary in improving penetration to foreign market thereby improving on export which translates to a higher GDP (melchet, 2005). CASE STUDY 2 Though strategic location and the issue of wages rate are considered by a foreign investor in determining whether to invest in a certain country or not, there are other major factors which are first considered. The availability of energy and associated cost are given priority in manufacturing industries since energy cost comprises a huge percentage of manufacturing cost hence one of the main determinants in making investment decision. The level of infrastructure is also considered by business. The possibility of growth and political stability should also be an integral part of such a marketing strategy since these two factors will determine whether a business will grow in foreign market. Through most of the study conducted it has also been proved that vibrant financial system Global economic development 4 also plays a major role in encouraging FDI (zedillo, 2005). On marketing Gwlad I would include such issues as tax system which benefit inventors e. g. tax allowance on investment. To increase foreign income from tourism then issues such as beautiful scenery and variety of wildlife have to be included. Further more technology play a major role in global market and therefore a mention of the technological achievement and possible advancement in technology should be included in the countries marketing strategy as firms currently rely on technology in performing it core business. Case Study 3 Technology advancement have led countries like china and Japan to be the most industrialized and leading exporters in the global Market. Consequently their economy have grown and a country like china with a population higher than the whole of Africa have been able to support its citizen and even offer loans and grant to other nations. Though technological advancement is key to economic development it has to be matched with good governance and visionary leaders who are able to inspire their people to reach new height (Polanski, 2004). In developing the economic policy there are others sectors which should be considered. This includes, health, financial sector which includes among other banks, insurance market, and the capital market and aerospace and automotive sectors in the transport industry. Case Study 4 One of the major strength of developing domestic companies is that it protects capital Global economic development 5 freight which adversely affects the balance of payment and the exchange rate. Domestic companies mostly employ people from within the country which reduces the level of unemployment. The income generated by domestic firms is usually re invested back thereby improving in economic growth. Some of the other income which is distributed as dividend to the owner increases the level of aggregate demand and saving levels due to increase in disposable income. Where aggregate demand increases business will be forced to produce more goods which lead to their growth and expansion (McDonnell, 2003). As saving levels increase businesses will have available capital for investment and through the multiplier effect where investment increase the GDP will also increase therefore accelerating the economic growth of the country. If steps are taken to develop domestic companies then they may grow to a level of being multinationals which will generate foreign income to the country. One of the major threats in developing domestic companies is that in case of harsh economic condition they may not withstand and therefore collapse. There are also possibility of political interference in the management and operation of such firms. Due to the limited fund available it may not be possible to avail all the required capital for expansion which means that such business will be operating below capacity and there will be under utilization of resources. Further more the economy can grow at a very low rate if only the domestic business are relied upon to accelerate growth. Lack of competition will be another weakness in that business will not improve on core area of performance such as technology therefore products will be of low quality and higher Global economic development 6 price with inability o compete in global market. Where competition lack then there is low level of creativity and innovation in products and service development therefore the economy will lag behind (Coparosa, 2004). Where the country is able to attract foreign direct investment then it is able to improve on technological advancement since such investors transfer technology to the host country. Further more since the country is experiencing a capital rationing this foreign firms do not require any form of financing from government and the funds available could be used to develop other sectors where foreign companies are unwilling to invest. Furthermore this foreign firm introduces competition which forces business to produce goods effectively and efficiently. The major threat of encouraging multinationals to invest in the country is that they can kill local industries incase where such firms are not able to compete favorably. Some of the multinational which occupies a greater stake in the economy sometimes dictate or influence the policy made by government to their advantage since where e government fail to comply they threaten to withdraw. One of the main weaknesses of using FDI is the issue of capital flight. Most usually send the profit generated from its operation back to it parent company which adversely affect the economy. However such businesses are able to sustain harsh economic condition and also improve the level of infrastructure in the host country. In using combination strategy the government ensures that domestic firms grow while at the same time attracting foreign direct investment which steers the economic growth. There should be a balance between protecting domestic firms and maintaining Global economic development 7 environment which enables foreign firms to compete fairly with domestic firms (Roca, 1983) Due to shortage of funds that the country experience and other benefits that accrue from having FDI it is advisable that the country employs a combination of strategy if it aim to achieve faster economic development. Case study 5 In persuading multinationals to develop local supply chain then the country have to change policies on taxation of this foreign firms. Issues such as tax allowance on investment can encourage such multinational to set up business to take such advantages of allowance. Also policies that streamline the financing system are also important since the financial system is a factor considered by multinational before venturing into any market. To encourage multinational to undertake research and development in the country then the country should have a well designed policy concerning copyright, trade marks or use of intellectual property. Also where commercial services such as advertising, local research firms and professional service are established and well regulated then multinational can be motivated to use such services. Furthermore policies concerning regional integration are important since it assist business to supply it commodity to other international market without barriers to trade both tariff and non tariff therefore improving on it competiveness in the global market. In addition the transport system is necessary for efficient operation of any supply chain therefore policies should be designed to improve such systems. Global economic development 8 CASE STUDY 6 Where a country is a member of the EU then there is no obstacle on free movement of goods, people and capital therefore the country can easily market and export its goods to members countries thereby improving on its balance of payment. Through the European social fund then the country will be able to improve on its level of employment thereby raising the standard of living of its citizen. The creation of European investment bank will facilitate the economic expansion of the country through creation of new resources. The EU has also developed a well established system of ensuring that competition is fair in the common markets which will therefore means that weak members states such as Gwlad are not exploited or taken advantage of by other strong and developed nations. However being such a member of EU then you have to adopt a common custom tariff and common commercial policy towards non members which may therefore reduce the country aggressiveness to participate in the global market. Countries such as China, Brazil and Australia are the new fastest growing economy in the world hence they provide a ground on which new market can be found. Further more bilateral and multilateral agreement with such country can be more beneficial than joining a trading block for a country with a weak economy (godison, 1988). For a country like Gwlad which need to achieve faster economic development it need to develop free trade agreement with this growing economies as they present a better opportunity for growth than a trading block. CASE STUDY 7 Global economic development 9 One of the merit of having a cluster development policy is having a balanced economy in that you do not allow foreign firm to dominate the local market but also give chance for domestic business to grow and reach a level at which they can compete in the global market . having both local and foreign firm present multinational from influencing government policy with threat to with draw since their position will be taken up by local firms. One of the problems inherent in such a cluster development policy is development of policy which attracts foreign entity while at the same time ensuring protection to domestic firms. The best option of organizing sector development is having specific policies that take special need of each sector rather than general policies which just give a general outlay instead of specific guideline for sector development (madon, 1997). CASE STUDY 8 As the company is ready to employ 30,000 people this will be a great boost to the economy as it will reduce the level of unemployment and ultimately increase the GDP. However where foreign suppliers are contracted to supply good rather than local suppliers this will lead to loss of business and capital flight from the country. Furthermore the demand by this firm that the country liars with the host country of these suppliers to request for a tax break may be an added cost to the country as they may in return ask for other favors which may hurt the economy. The government should agree to give research and development grant but not succumb to demand of allowing foreign supplies to be contracted as this will erode most of the benefit generated. Total Quality Management (TQM) in Fly Emirates

Total Quality Management (TQM) in Fly Emirates .Emirates in the Middle East is the major airline and subsidiary of emirates group. It is the national airline of Dubai, United Arab emirates which thus operates near around 2000 passengers flights in a week from its hub at Dubai international airport, terminal 3 to 100 destinations in 60 countries in the 6 near about continents. The organization is a subsidiary of the emirates group which has more than 50,000 employees and is owned by the government of Dubai under the corporation of Dubai. The other cargo activities are thus undertaken by the Emirates sky group division. The airline has been ranked among the top 10 worldwide in terms of passengers, revenue, etc. and has thus become the largest airline in the middle east in terms of revenue, passengers, fleet size, etc. and in the recent survey of 2009, the airline was the seventh largest in the world in terms of the passenger carried and fourth largest in terms of scheduled international passenger kilometers flown. The organization has thus built a strong brand name as the trendsetter in the industry, peculiarly in terms of service excellence and the consistency of profitability and thus the organization was ranked fifth best airline in the world from all the perspective by the research consultancy by Skytrax in the year 2009. (2009) culture of the organization The airline is the subsidiary of The Emirates group. The culture of the organization have always been in providing facilities up to the brim and up to the certain extent and that is why the organization have always been in top 10 airlines around the world. It is the quality of the organization that it has been steadily capturing the traffic from North America to South Asia and almost all the continents of the world, allowing all the passengers to bypass the traditional hubs of London, Paris, Frankfurt; the home bases of British airways, Air France with the transit stop at the Dubai international airport instead. The culture has also been to change the organization to the brand name and thus from 2004, the company changed its slogan to Fly Emirates. In the year 2008, the organization launched a slogan mainly around their root network of 100 destinations in more than 50 countries across six continents Fly Emirates. Keep discovering and most recently it launched a campaign to promote D ubai as the destination using the slogan Fly Emirates. Meet Dubai. And some more like The finest In the Sky, Be Good to Yourself, When was the last time you did for the first time. The culture has been to provide optimum quality services to the passengers. They thus provide different class of seats like the First class which thus have a full suite, complete with closing doors to ensure privacy, a mini-bar and a coat rack. It also includes the feature of 58 cm LCD screen and a 2 meter fully flat bad and thus for the first class, they were ranked second by Skytrax. After the first class, they have the business class with the feature seats of 150 cm that recline to flat beds, 43 cm wide TV screen and thus these passengers have the ability to customize and save seat and the third is thus the business class. The organization culture thus includes innovation and providing new ideas and thus has the perspective of providing every possible feature to the passengers and for that they were th e first airline who launched IFE system for all the three classes. IFE thus stands for In flight entertainment system which thus have the feature like ICE which stands for Information, Communication and Entertainment. The culture has also been in investing different events like the organization is the official sponsor of the Fifa World cup, sponsors of many football groups like AC Milan, Arsenal F.C. they will thus also sponsor Rugby world cup 2011 and thus their branding have thus made them the official partner of International Cricket Council up to 2015. Another quality culture of the organization is that they have been always expanding their staff and recruiting more and more staff which is thus a good sign for the companys growth. The global financial crisis have thus not impacted much on the airlines and thus they are recruiting more staff and thus they tell that their plans are on going and always promising and their aim is thus to acquire the number one position for maintain ing the quality and the serviced rendered and not the size. total quality barriers faced by the organization There are many quality barriers that have been faced by the organizations that thus include the fare problems, the pilots problems and not delivering any facilities on the lounge. The fare problems thus include the problems that are faced by the customers on the online booking. They just complain that if there is a problem in their website and many a times they do not get any response. A fare problem thus include that while booking a ticket when the customer looks in the fare conditions, system tell them Skywards flex and when they look on miles they earn, the system shows them the both legs Saver. Another problem on the website is that while the customers are looking at the mileage calculator, the system always shows saver. Another problem include that while going through the whole process, the endorsement box always reads flex fare and when the customers go the manage booking, the system shows saver fare, then the customer call the reservation counter, they tell them to call the Sk ywards and the Skywards do not know it. Another problem includes many of the times the customers are not replied for their complaints. The problems become severe when the pilots complaint about the organization and make a statement that another threat or another accident is possible. The pilots say that there is a concern about the morale, management and the fatigue of the UAE based airline. The pilots say that they do no want to see another smoking hole in the ground. Another pilot says that often they are made to flight to their maximum allowable time and the accident which took place on march 20 at the Melbourne airport, the reason for the accident was that the pilot had rarely slept in the day and before that accident the pilot had flown more than 95 hours in the last month an thus the pilots thus made the statement that if a fatigue related accident is going to take place, it will be definitely from the Fly Emirates and another pilot says that when people are tired, mistakes u sually occur and the result of the mistake of the pilot can take many lives. Another flaw that has been usually observed in the Emirates is that not giving privilege to the old customers and thus making a feeling that it is rather running for the new passengers. These are some of the quality barriers that the organization has faced and is facing now too. (2006) reasons for why these elements are barriers to total quality and why these barrirs are considered to be total quality barriers When we look into the matter of the fare problem, it is the barrier to the total quality as the fare problem can not only reduce the quality but can also take some critical eroticization from the customers, there are millions of customers that do the online booking and if they face a problem sooner or later every time they book their tickets, certainly they will just remove their habit of going through this airline and would thus prefer some other airline. The several customers while booking if undergo through a problem, it is the responsibility of the company to sort out their problem when the complaint is put forward by the customer but when the complaint is not dealt with, the customer rather becomes unhappy by the facilities provided and rather do not prefer the same airlines again the next time he travels. The pilots problems are thus a severe one and thus have to be sorted out. At the time of global crisis, the Fly Emirates thus appointed fewer less pilots and thus the major pr oblem that arose was the fatigue problem. A person when tired and not completely fit tends to do some mistakes and the pilots mistakes can take lives of lot of people. This will thus reduce the faith of the customers in the airlines and could pose a serious threat for the economy of the airlines. The flaw that arose in the recent times was also the crucial one. Emirates is thus not giving privilege to the old customers and thus they feel it is running only for the new passengers. At the international business level, you have to take care of the old customers as to broaden your business farther and farther. The travelers that will sooner become your permanent customers have to be dealt with properly and thus they are the people who indirectly promote the business characteristics of a quality culture and the differences between FLy emirates culture and quality culture Quality culture is thus a culture maintained in an organization to thus have the quality maintained. The culture thus is inducing in the organization to thus have a future good prospect. It thus includes providing quality facilities to the customers to the maximum. Characteristics of the quality culture thus include brooding up the business to have a good mind set in the people minds that the organizations always maintains quality. The difference between the Fly Emirates culture and quality culture was thus that they failed to provide quality to certain customers and thus the customers were disappointed. The factors might be many to make the difference between the emirates culture and the quality culture but once the customers is dissatisfied with the facilities, he never prefers the organization again and when the customer put forwards a complaint to the organization and then no regards are paid, the quality of the organization is thus not maintained. Likewise quality culture within an organization tells to deal with every customer properly and with quality while the Emirates could not develop relationship with the old customers, could not satisfy the customers properly and thus the quality of the organization could not be maintained. report and analysis of the total quality system of fly emirates Fly Emirates has always been known for the quality and that is why they have been ranked under 10 by Skytrax. The managers have always been saying that their basic motive is to acquire number one position in quality but not in size. The quality is always maintained by the organization. The organization was the first airline in the world to introduce a personal entertainment system on a commercial air craft. All the three classes have in flight entertainment system which thus include ICE system. ICE thus stands for Information, Communication and entertainment. The facilities thus they serve in the three seats of class are as follows The first one is thus the first class which thus has a full suite, complete with closing doors to ensure privacy, a coat rack, a mini bar and storage. They also feature an ICE system of 58 cm LCD screen and the seat converts into the 2 m fully flat bed and thus they were ranked second by Skytrax in the yea 2009. The business class feature seats with 15 0 cm pitch that recline to 200 cm long angled flat beds. Other features include privacy partition, massage function, winged headrest, an overhead seat of light and two individual reading lights, USB ports, in seat power supply and an RCA socket for laptop connection and a 43 cm wide screen of TV. The economy class thus offers a 30 inch seat pitch and standard seat width. The seat features adjustable head rests, an ICE in flight entertainment system. Thus they are always leading from the front providing the quality and maintaining the quality system in their organization. how cultural change could be implemented and maintained within the fly emirates The organizations culture has certainly less flaws but these flaws had to be removed by changing the culture of the organization. It includes satisfying every customer and taking a feedback from the customer and thus implementing on the feedback. For example if a certain lot of people claim that the sitting facilities in the business class are not comfortable, the organizers can have a look at the needs of the people and make the people feel comfortable and make them think they are listened and made them grow faith in the organization. This is the best method for the promotion and growth of the organization as the customers will help increase the customers as mouth publicity is the biggest publicity in the business class. It also includes developing a good customer organization interface by maintaining the old relations, giving privileges to the old customers. The failure of addressing the culture of an organization is thus the most frequent reason for the management initiatives that have limited the resources. We can thus say that the cultural change could be brought by change in behavior towards the old customers, developing a good customer organization interface, dominant values and looking towards the need and the beliefs of the people make the customers feel that they are an integral part of the organization, commitment by the organization and keeping it firm. Thus the culture of good team work as the organizers could thus be developed like investing at the proper place and many more. recommendations on improvement of total quality management system of fly emirates There are many recommendations that can be given to the organization on improvement of the total quality system of Fly Emirates. The recommendation thus include creating a consistency of purpose to serve the customers, adopting new philosophies and new ideas at different times, ceasing dependency on something peculiarly to rather achieve more success, improving constantly with time with new projects, new services offered and with new plans ejected. The recommendation also include opening up a different institute for training up the pilots, adopting and instituting leadership within the organization and driving out fear from every employee of the organization, separate distances between various staffs and managers, equal treatment to every employee should be given and thus the success should be shared among every employee, set some targets for the workforce, influence them by some slogans, removing barriers that rob people of pride of the workforce and removing the annual ratings and the merit system. Start a program that could institute self improvement within every employee of the organization, put everybody in the organization to work for accomplishing the transformations. The recommendations also include developing or creating some ethics for the organization which could rather maintain the discipline of the organization, creating the integrity, building up trust among the customers to have more business in the future. The communications among several employees is thus too important as the communications bind the employees together and bind everyone together. So these were the recommendation on improvement of the total quality management of Fly Emirates. (Emi10)

Rage Against the Machine Essay -- Music Bands Politics Essays

Rage Against the Machine Zack de la Rocha, Tom Morello, Brad Wilk, and Timmy Commerford took to a Philadelphia stage in 1993 clad in black electrical tape that covered their mouths and the initials PMRC written in black marker across their chests. They stood in this fashion for fourteen minutes while feedback from their guitars rumbled through the amps. This seemingly simple prank was actually protest against the censorship of music and the Parents Music Resource Center, founded by Tipper Gore (Buchi, incidents par. 3-4). The music of Rage Against the Machine contains the political and social views of the band members. They are very avid about defending constitutional rights of the individual and large groups of deprived people. The members of Rage Against the Machine each bring diversity and strong political views into the music they produce. Each member is unique in his childhood background and his introduction to music. It is important to understand their backgrounds to fully understand their passion for political justice. Zack de la Rocha was born in Long Beach, California in 1970. After his parent's separation when he was one year old, Zack lived with his mother in the "whitest community in Southern L.A.". Zack turned to his father to develop close ties with the Chicano community, but after his father's mental breakdown, Zack was forced to look for direction in a high school friend and now current band member Timmy Commerford. Zack, who is responsible for writing the band's lyrics, uses his intelligence to express his anger, especially in the mistreatment of groups like the Zapatistas (Taneja, Band Members par. 1). Timmy Commerford, the band's bassist, ... ...noose over all the new societies that it sees. "Ashes in the Fall" calls the leaders of today fascists that talk society up as a chosen life free of blot and mixture. The song contrasts this by showing that these promises fall through and the world is as it seems not as they want you to see it. "Ashes in the Fall" ends by showing that the closing of factories and schools by the rich drive the poor to crime. This driving force to crime opens the doors to the jail cells and the common person is tucked away. Rage Against the Machine uses its music to project its views about many political and social problems. The power of music has helped their messages reach people in positions that are normally politically retarded. Rage has had a profound influence on groups of people across the globe and will continue to do so in the future.

My Angels :: Personal Narrative

My Angels It wasn't until I started to write this testimony that I realized that there are two special angels in my life. One in heaven and one on Earth. I had the general reasoning of any teenager: run to your closest friends, boyfriend, girlfriend, family, teachers for solutions to your problems, or for guidance, but that's not always so. Sure, some good friends and family are close enough to relate to, but it's the people that can read your face like a book that I am speaking of. The people that always bring a smile to your face even when you're in your deepest turmoil. These are your angels. Adam has been and always will be my angel. He was my salvation when I was weak, my shoulder to weep on, a joker, and an all around nice guy. If if it weren't for him I probably wouldn't have auditioned for Juilliard a few weeks back. I owe so much to him, but the biggest thanks I could ever give would be his persistent manner in getting me to audition for the drama plays. I have always had a passion for drama but didn't want to pursue it in St. Paul. I was so depressed about leaving all my friends behind at Whittier, that when I came here I didn't even give up---- I just didn't start at all. It wasn't until my first week of school that I met Adam, the boy who smiled from ear to ear... Little did I know that he would be the best friend I would make at St. Paul, and the first to leave me behind. Over the next two years we had gotten incredibly close. We went out for weekends, celebrated his 15th birthday with Andrea and Crystal, and Miguel---his closest friends. We helped ea ch other with our relationship problems, family problems, school mishaps... We were each other's alter egos when we went out. We had a conversation over the Internet a week before he died. He was so mad that I hadn't auditioned for the musical that he forced me to join crew (which a few weeks previous I had). That night we were talking about all these pranks we would play on the cast and crew, and the cast party to be had, and all the fun.

The Sleeper by Edgar Allan Poe Essay -- Poetry Analysis

The Sleeper, by Edgar Allan Poe, was first published in the Poems of 1831; this poem has since been revised from its current version which was printed in 1845. This poem was written during the Romanticism Period. This time period is defined as a time in which poets began to â€Å"rebel against the Neoclassical restrictions and dominance of reason as poetic aim. Romantic poetry celebrated the imagination over rationality, passion, and dreams over reason and external reality, and isolated individuality over collective humankind. Romantic poetry looked to celebrate both the supernatural and elevate the commonplace.† (Henriksen) Poe’s imagination prevails in this lyric poem. The speaker of the poem experiences an internal conflict while mourning the death of a loved one. The relationship of the speaker to his surroundings is introduced into the main narrative in the opening of the poem, and is specific to when this occurrence is taking place, â€Å"At midnight, in the month of June†. June is the month in which the summer solstice takes place, in the Pagan culture of this time â€Å"Midsummer was thought to be a time of magic, when evil spirits were said to appear. The pagans often wore protective garlands of herbs and flowers.† (chiff.com) Today this concoction is used by modern herbalists as a mood stabilizer. Midnight is also known as the witching hour when ghosts are considered to have their most power. Black magic is also thought to be infallible at this hour as well. The speaker of the poem describes himself as standing beneath the moon, this sublunary expulsion is pertinent to the narrative of the poem, and he is admitting his mortality in this line. The moon is personified in the fourth line â€Å"Exhales from her out her golde n rim†, which is ... ... be casting stones, or holding a conversation. The speaker of the poem does not move on from this emotional torment, yet I do feel as if in his quest for closure he does resolve some of the tumultuous feelings he does have in regard to losing his love. Leadership and Management Essay

Initially I plan on reviewing the prevailing leadership styles in my organisation and then assessing the impact of these on the organisation’s values and performance. In order to assess the leadership styles I have produced a questionnaire (see appendix 1). The questionnaire was designed to find out how directive, participative and permissive each manager in our organisation is and then study the most prevailing style. It was evident from the information collated that the prevailing leadership style in our organisation is participative and directive rather than permissive. On assessing this information it became apparent that our manager’s leadership styles reflect a Contingency theory and they rather be present and take part in services in order to ensure controlled success. Contingency theory is a class of behavioral theories that claim there is no best way to lead a company, or to make decisions. Instead, the best action is contingent (dependent) upon the situation. Several contingency approaches were developed in the1960s. They suggested that previous theories such as Weber’s bureaucracy and Taylor’s Scientific Management had failed because they neglected that management style and organisational structure were influenced by various aspects of the environment: known as contingency factors. There could not be â€Å"one best way† for leadership or organisation. Historically, contingency theory has attempted to formulate broad views about formal structures that are typically associated with or best fit the use of different organisations. This perspective originated with the work of Joan Woodward (1958), who argued that skills directly determine differences in such organisational attributes as a span of control, centralisation of authority, and the formalisation of rules and procedures. My Organisation Values and Performance The organisation that I work for delivers a range of high quality services and projects, these services follow the principles of empowering communities, developing lives, furthering equality, diversity and inclusion and strengthening local voluntary sector delivery. These principles dictate the values in which we function. We are very much a voluntary sector, charitable organisation ensuring that at the heart of our services are the people that access them. Performance is measured through a set of service delivery indicators which form the base of our promises to funding bodies, staff, volunteers and customers in everything we do. These indicators are measured via our service development plan. Each year we publish an Annual Report based on our Service Delivery Indicators, which measure our progress and informs the public of our work over the previous year in delivering against our priorities. (See Appendix 2 for our organisations SDI’s) Our organisation values and performance clearly highlight a need for the leadership to be open and receptive. This allows us to except feedback and input from our service users. A directive and participatory leadership style is imposed by managers in our organisation for staff; however when dealing with service users we have to adopt a more directive style to ensure commination is clear and there is no room for bought. We have found in the past when we have given service users who are vulnerable and have mental health difficulties an opportunity to contribute to services they feel empowered, however they need time and guidance in order to make informed decisions. Effectiveness of my Own Leadership Style On assessing my own leadership style I appeared to be more directive, in the middle when it came to participation, however I did not seem to be very permissive. The results did not surprise me and seemed to be consistent with my approach. I tend to direct staff by the use of many models including action plans which are produced in team meeting and each member of staff is allocated actions, timescales, budget and directions. I am participatory when tasks are being carried out I ensure I understand the delivery method and observe when necessary. For example if we are promoting a new group I will ensure all promotion literature is checked by me prior to going out and visit the new group to view session delivery. I do not hide away form front line delivery and ensure I gage with staff, clients and volunteers therefore I understand the reason why on my leadership assessment I did not score highly on being permissive. Therefore I feel my management style suits the organisation. However with the changing nature of our organisation leading towards a more business-like approach I may find I have to review my management style. I may need to become more permissive, less participatory and even more directive. This will ensure I can work more strategically to order to retain services and staff. Changing my approach may be difficult for my staff to accept, however explaining that their jobs may be at risks if I do not manage differently may put it all into perspective. By applying a Contingency theory mentioned earlier I should be able to manage this effectively. I asked my staff to assess my leadership style using the questionnaire I produced and gave to fellow managers (Appendix 1). The results mirrored my self assessment, demonstrating that I understand my own leadership style well and that the staff have the same opinion. Apply Own Leadership Style in Range of Situations Over the last two weeks I have begun to assess my own leadership style in a variety of situations. These have mainly taken the form of meetings. I have chaired a client/volunteer meeting and a full staff meeting. My leadership style tended to change in these situations. I became less formal with the client and volunteer meeting in order to project at their level of understanding. Less detail was presented and less decision making was required. The meeting was more informative and decisions had been made by the staff team prior to the meeting. Feedback and participation was welcomed however it was in a manner in which it could be controlled so as a staff team we could make informed decisions.

Evaluation of Internship

1. Describe two difficult incidents or challenging situations that you experienced during your internship. The difficult challenging situations that I have experienced during the internship were at the Veranda restaurant and the Learning and development office. Firstly, I have difficulty to adapt myself from an undergraduate into the professional commis at the world top five star hotel’s, to be worked the Veranda restaurant.I need to learn and memorise the restaurant’s menus, name of the cutlery that I havn’t been using before, to get to know all the employeesand trainees, learn new manners and how should we deal with each of our guest and approach to our guest and also living in the Bangkok city which have one of the most difficult transportation.Secondly,the difficulty in the Learning and development (L&D) office is that the during the time that I’ve work is the low season in Bangkok which it is a good opportunity for the hotel and the L&D department to train and set big events for the staff such as the Walk Rally and L&D workshop in order to strengthen the relationship between co-workers and develop professional skills. L&D department have to contact many other departments within the hotel in order to get in touch with each employees.During the April, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has choosed Mandarin Oriental Bangkok to run the L&D workshop conference which more than 20 of the L&D managers of Mandarin Oriental Hotel around the globe will come to the hotel to have conference for a week and during those time our department’s job were to set the delight events to welcome the managers and run the workshop. 2. Explain how you dealt with these situations and the impact your actions had on the other parties (customers, line managers, colleagues†¦) After a period of 2 first weeks, I have settled myself in an adaptation environment very well.The assistance from co-worker have aid me to go through the challenge without a do ubt. I get to know every staffs willingly, we play soccer every weekend. The chiefs have given me a lot of great guidance in term of servicing each guest. The manager has taught and inspire us to work. Overall the professional environment in the restaurant has automatically turned me into one of the professional. Every problem has been solved by the guidance and the training by the management team and the managers.Due to the small number of employees in L&D department, I get to know and close to each staff member very easily. Our team have a great team work, my trainer trained and taught me very well which allow me to get the job done very fast and efficient. The L&D team including me and other department within the hotel have put in large amount of effort to plan, set and run this big event. We have worked overtime to get the plan done before the workshop started. It is very fun to work and to get such sastisfaction from the L&D managers is one of the best thing I would’ve e ver imagine. 3.Identify alternative actions that you could have undertaken which would have possibly improved the outcomes in these situations. I could have copy the menu and study it after work to memoris the dishes. There is 2 menus in the restaurant which included the breakfast menu and the dinner menu, wine and beverage menu should have also done the same. This will allow me to learn the menu more quickly as in the working time I can not manage to learn the menu. I should have stay close more with the managers to get their advice, understand their point of view and gain more lesson from the expert’s experience.After the week of conference event, the L&D workshop conference was announced as one of the best workshop that have ever before by all the L&D managers. The event sastisfied every manager by delight welcoming events, lots of surprise and the assistance of the event from every department. There is nothing could have done better. Part 2 : IMPROVING PERSONAL OR INTERPE RSONAL SKILLS OVER A PERIOD OF TIME ( about 500 words) 1. Identify four (4) of your strengths and two (2) of your weaknesses that you experienced during your internship.Describe them in a working context. The strength that I have gained during this internship are the teamwork between co-worker, the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok team have taught everyone work collaborately to each other allowing their united effort to turn the hotel to be one of the leader in the world. Professional workmanship, the hotel have host many big world class events and service has been excellence for over centuries, being in the professional environment have gain me this strength.Company knowledge, the company have set many hospitality training for the staff, as a L&D trainee I have to attend to every meeting. The weakness that I experienced are the lack of effort, I have put most of effort at the first start of the internship and during the end, sometime I have not put enough amount of great effort into work but at the end I have improve myself brought out large amount of effort. Other weakness is that I should have take the internship longer as I only do it for 5 months.I have not learn enough and there is a lot of things that I have missed. 2. List specific actions / alternatives that may help you to improve these weaknesses. a. Set a statement, I should set a statement and point out my objective of what i should gain from this internship to allow me to learn everything I should or wanted to. b. Maximise internship period, This first internship I have taken only 5 months and have not learn enough but the the next one I will take longer than 5. 3.Determine a plan (actions and deadlines) that will keep you committed to this period of self-coaching. To set a statement won’t take long time for the action. I will only need to know which position/department I’m going to working in and set the objective of what I need to learn from the position/department. 4. How would you be a ble to fairly and accurately evaluate your improvements ? I would be fairly and accurately evaluate my improvements by the feedback of the co-workers. According to the exit interview with the Assistance L&D Manager.He has asked an tell me about my strengths and the weaknesses, what I have gained and what I have not gain, he has also asked what do I want to learn more from this internship. The Assistance L&D Manager have also evaluate my improment as at first of the start working I do not know the staff very well which cause me and the team communicate not very well but at the end after I have feedback from the L&D manager of how to work with the team, I have improve myself dramatically and efficiently.The Assistance L&D Manager and the team have been work with everyday during the intership period. The comments and the feedbacks from the co-worker are one of the most reliability evaluate of my improvement. APPENDICES 1. Copy of work certificate if applicable 2.
